CIDM e-newsletter: May 2001: Students Implement a Content Management System at the University of Washington

Students Implement a Content Management System at the University of Washington

The University of Washington's Department of Technical Communication, a leading technical communication program, is preparing students to be highly competitive as they enter the job market. Recently, a group of undergraduates and graduate students began a project to implement a content management system in their department. They hope that the CMS will increase efficiency and give them an opportunity to put their knowledge to practical use.

They plan to link the department's CMS to a dynamic Web site aimed at prospective students. Through the project, the students are learning relational database structure and XML, knowledge that they may otherwise have gained only after entering the workforce. They will continue the project over the summer.

In addition, the students are taking courses in content management and meeting every week to discuss readings and listen to guest speakers.

The students recognize that companies are increasingly looking for employees with content management skills, and through their courses, meetings, and the CMS project, these students will truly be competitive in the workforce.
