Minimalism and DITA Enable Significant Cost Savings for Avaya Telephone Manuals

When Lou Lombardi decided to employ a minimalist strategy for the Avaya telephone user guides, he believed that customers did not need all the technical detail that had long encumbered the manuals. After all, most people already know how to use a desktop telephone. But he had to convince the engineers and product managers and even the usability expert that content they had long held dear could be replaced to save costs.

I’ve enjoyed the recent CIDM attention to telecommuting. Beginning with Bill Hackos’ blog entry and followed up by Bill Gearhart’s eNewsletter article, I think it is safe to say that the ‘green argument’ for telecommuting is bullet-proof. In this increasingly environmentally-charged age of awareness, arguing against a way to reduce our carbon footprints would surely be met with jaw-dropping shock. So why then, given the facts of green telecommuting benefits, are we so slow to institute it?
