Propinquity—A critical factor for successful content management?

If you’re like me, you have no idea what “propinquity” is. I wasn’t even sure how to spell it. The word appeared in one of the final chapters of our Best Practices 2008 Theme Book. At the September conference, we’ll be using the Influencer: The Power to Change Anything as a focus for our discussions of change. Authors Kerry Patterson et al. introduce the importance of physical proximity as a critical factor in change. The closer together people are, the more likely they are to build the best relationships. Better relationships should lead to better collaboration and team work.

You are doing a DITA pilot project, reusing topics to create three documents. How do you measure your success? I present here three metrics: Two are widely used but are invalid or give invalid results for topic sets that vary widely in size. One that I strongly recommend gives valid results by considering content rather than topics.
