June 1, 2022

JoAnn Hackos, founder of Comtech Services and The Center for Information-Development Management (CIDM), received the President’s Award during the 2022 STC Summit. The President’s Award honors those who have made distinguished contributions to the profession of technical communication or the Society.

Here’s what Kirsty Taylor, President STC 2021-2022, said during the award presentation:

This year, I am pleased to present the President’s Award to two people who have either influenced, guided, and supported my career, and also encouraged me by their examples to offer my service to the Society.

I fell into tech comm. In my first job back in the late 90s, my manager had a book on his shelf, which he referred to frequently. I found that book in a technology bookstore, and it became my work bible to help me with planning, estimating, and then doing my work. The author of this book came to Australia to deliver training in their techniques, and I flew to Sydney to attend the training. That book was Managing your Documentation Projects by Dr JoAnn Hackos.

Thank you, JoAnn, for sharing your knowledge with so many generations of technical communicators.

JoAnn’s award citation reads:

For sharing your expertise to guide generations of technical writers in their professional development, and for your inspirational service to STC.

JoAnn, along with CIDM’s advisor board committee member, Rebekka Anderson also received the Frank R. Smith Award for Outstanding Journal Article for their August 2021 article “Practicing Technical Communications’ Experiences with and Perspectives on Academic Publishing.”
