It’s a great time to be an information developer

Approximately 300 people joined CIDM at the CMS/DITA North America conference in San Diego in April, which was kicked off by keynote speaker, Jared Spool. Jared’s talk, “It’s a Great Time to be A UX Designer,” set the tone for the conference by reaffirming the importance and value of user experience design in today’s market. As information developers, we are a part of the total user experience; in fact, we are a critical part as we are the touchpoint when users are frustrated with the rest of their user experience. Users come to our content stressed and impatient, looking for answers as quickly as possible. A good user experience at that time can save the day—we can reset our user’s attitude and help them end on a happy note.

Terminology Management in a DITA Environment

Terminology management means “to control the words that are used in written or spoken language”. Consider a fictitious global medical engineering company. Medical devices are under heavy legal controls, directives, and norms, which force the company to translate information. The company has several teams that produce textual information. In the Research and Development team, the product is designed and all parts of the product are named.

  • Provide current information to its suppliers, vendors, sales people, and service technicians

Cirrus Logic Inc. is a fabless semiconductor supplier that specializes in analog, mixed-signal, and audio DSP integrated circuits (ICs). As of 2015 Cirrus Logic has its headquarters in Austin, Texas. The company’s audio processors and audio converters feature in many professional audio and consumer entertainment products, including smartphones, tablets, portable media players, automotive entertainment systems, home-theater receivers, televisions and docking stations. Cirrus Logic’s analog mixed-signal converter chips are also used in a wide variety of energy-related applications, including its new line of LED controllers for the incandescent light-bulb replacement market, as well as energy-measurement chips for applications such as digital utility meters.
