From Waterfall to Agile: Adapting Traditional Metrics to Measure, Monitor, and Achieve Agile Success
Proponents argue that organizations adhering to an Agile methodology are better positioned to meet the needs and expectations of their customers, react to market needs and changes, and realize the greatest value from their resources. As a growing number of information development teams jump on the Agile bandwagon, with or without their product development teams, they must evaluate whether or not Agile meets its promises. However, traditional waterfall metrics tend to measure process and productivity, such as ensuring a defined workflow has been followed or calculating development hours per page or topic. Agile benefits, however, center less on how things were done and more on the resulting outcome, such as customer satisfaction or team collaboration. Managers need to adapt and change what they are measuring to obtain a complete picture of what they are accomplishing with their move to Agile.

The Welcome Reception on Sunday evening was influenced by the heady atmosphere of the Santa Fe Festival out on the plaza. Little did we know that we were also celebrating the day that New Mexico became a state.

Would you give it to your mother/grandmother?

Robert Phillips, Lasotell Pty Ltd.

Most of us have a mother/grandmother – but that is not the important point. It is the instant change in our thinking and perspective that even reading those few words can make in each of us. Why is that statement “would you give it to your mother/grandmother” important to technical writing and technical communication? It can affect every aspect of our approach to business (and life).

Deming’s 14 Points: Innovation as An Outcome

Barbara Cleary, PQ Systems
This article first appeared on the PQ Systems website.

In a rapidly changing business environment, it’s sometimes hard just to keep up with everyday demands—never mind having time to develop new and better approaches to changing requirements, needs, or markets. Staying ahead of the curve sounds as if it might demand working longer hours, hiring more people, or cloning oneself, none of which seem likely in the short term. So how does one manage to innovate in this environment?
